Thoughts from our founder, Joe

'For me, it's all about the cosy atmosphere. I've always been an autumnal person (although scents are good for anytime of the year!), and I have spent a lot on candles over the years.

I was at a party, speaking to a successful small business owner, and felt inspired by her story - how she built something from scratch and put her own mark on it. I mentioned I would love to get into making candles and she said 'you should do it!'. I felt excited to take the idea seriously. The idea of making something, building on it, and having someone appreciate your work is like artistry in its own way. I think if you can make something which other people appreciate and they can't find that specific item elsewhere, you've put your own unique stamp on the world and helped provide someone with a great experience.

Sloe & Hurst's signature scents are inspired by my time in Sussex, in different ways. When I hear other people coo over them, I think 'wow, my creativity has helped, people appreciate it', and that's really fulfilling.

Creating the products has given me a sense of purpose and a lot of joy. I have a few expansion plans in mind and aspire to partner with charities as the business grows.'

 Signature Scents

Currently we have three custom blends based on our founder's experience in Sussex locations.

We have more in the pipeline!

The
Forager

Growing up in Ticehurst, Joe followed the footpath opposite the family home, and foraged from the edible hedgerows. He and his family enjoyed making gins and preserves from the local produce.

The Innkeeper

A favourite spot for a day out, Joe and his family have enjoyed many picturesque walks in and around Alfriston, finding treats in the village store and interesting reads in the bookshop. Several memorable family get-togethers have taken place in the old-fashioned pubs with their cosy fires and indulgent puddings.

The Smuggler

Hastings, home to some of Joe's family, and where he first lived with his wife. The town is known for its industrious and smuggling history. It is also a town of proud artisans, a vibrant pub scene, and the iconic fishing huts.
